Understandably, the task of choosing a speech language pathologist (SLP) for a child is not an easy one for parents. At Innovative Speech Language Pathology, our team of trained and experienced SLPs has helped hundreds of children build and grow their communication and developmental skills. In the process, we have met many families, each of which have different needs and goals for their children. We understand that choosing an SLP is a highly personal decision. To help you with your decision, we have outlined a few important qualities we believe all successful SLPs should possess.

SLPs should have a sincere desire to help patients. The SLP should take the time to listen and understand the patient’s needs, strengths and limitations. A compassionate and caring SLP is able to create rapport and trust with the patient (and their family) much more effectively.

Effective Communicator

SLPs specialize in helping patients build communication skills, so it shouldn’t be surprising that they need to have good communication skills. A good SLP is able to communicate well with many people including patients, their families, teachers and other therapists or professionals that work with patients.

A Team Player

You have likely heard the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” This is certainly true when it comes to children with communication or developmental disabilities. SLPs are always a part of a team, either formally or informally. The speech language pathologist must be able to work with different professionals, parents and, of course, the patient. A good team player will be flexible when working with others and be open-minded to schedule changes, criticism or modifying treatment strategies when necessary.
